Silver Slipper

Status: Closed

Parish: St. Landry

Location: Leonville

Dana Olivier: “It was originally owned by my family, The Dupuis Family. They are old pictures and 2 of them contain my grandparents, Herman & Margaret Dupuis. I do not have the dates that these were taken. The photo of the exterior has a stamp on the back of it stating “CHANDLER STUDIO Lafayette, LA”. There was rooster cock pit at the Slipper (picture included). The man holding the rooster is my grandfather, Herman Dupuis, and the lady with her hand near the rooster’s neck is his wife and my grandmother, Margaret Guilbeau Dupuis. (i am not quite sure exactly who the others are but my father knows). The one with the car is just a picture taken outside and the one with the two couples is the interior of the Slipper with Herman & Margaret closer to the front (not sure who the couple is to the rear). The Silver Slipper was a combo of a grocery store and barroom. There was also a meat market across the street (all were associated together). The original Slipper was later sold by the original owners. Quite a few years later it caught fire and burned down. There is the “New Silver Slipper” located in the spot as the old one. It is more of a drive thru daiquiri hut which features live bands from time to time.”

  1. I’m actually descended from the Dupuis’; my grandmother’s maiden name was Mary Dupuis. I was trying to find out more about the Silver Slipper and came across your article on accident thank you so much for posting the pictures.

    • My father is about to turn 90, and one of the stories he loves to tell involves wonderful people he met who showed him hospitality in Louisiana. He was stationed at Fort Polk after the Korean conflict, and when he and several other soldiers had a weekend pass, they headed out (by car? hitchhiking?) to New Orleans. Either the car broke down or they were unable to hitch rides farther than Ville Platte. He said that in Ville Platte at the time there was an establishment named the Silver Slipper, and the owners showed the soldiers hospitality: they fed the young men and gave them a place to stay. From then on, Dad says, whenever they had a weekend pass they headed to the Silver Slipper.
Could this be the same Silver Slipper and that he was mistaken that it was in Ville Platte?
Dad speaks glowingly of the family, and I would love to tell him their names and perhaps more about them when we surprise him with stories for his birthday in just a few weeks.
Might you be able to help me? I would appreciate it very much.
