Roof Garden

Status: Closed

Parish: Lafayette

Location: Lafayette

Listed in “Readers recall clubs where they danced to Louisiana Music” from The Daily Advertiser, December 29, 1998: “Readers of The Daily Advertiser were asked to submit names of’ the clubs where they danced to Louisiana music in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, with a brief recollection of what the club was like and who played there.” The original Voorhies Roof Garden was on what is now the Lafayette Motors lot on Jefferson (called Oak Ave then?) and it predated all of the clubs that came to make up The Strip, which was on the other side of Jefferson. It was a two story structure, hence the name Roof.

  1. In 1957, I bought my first beer in the old roof garden. I jumped up on the bar stool laid my quarter down and order a beer. The bartender barely took notice as he placed the opened bottle of Jax in front of me. I sat there and sipped my beer with my friend BJ. I was 13-years old at the time.

  2. A guy friend had too many beers and climbed the pine tree and declared he’ll watch the sun rise.
