As a young child, before I was 10 yrs old, my older sister would fix our mom’s hair, and help her put on her makeup and get all dolled up. My dad would put on his long sleeved blue shirt and his brown dress pants and they’d go to the Bon Ton Roulet just west of Holly Beach. My dad would get jealous when other men would come over to their table and ask him if they could dance with his “daughter”. I’am 59 years old and I remember it like it was yesterday.
As a teenager working for Cameron Telephone in the summer we would there at lunch. I was amazed how some people would already be partying. The hamburger where the best!
The club had a floor, high above the ground. On pillars, into the water. The dance hall jetted out over the water. The dance floor was real wide and jetted over the waters. The bandstand stage was towards the coast, basically on top of the water. If you were playing accordion, your reeds rusted from the saltwater blowing in. The bandstand was near the water. Joe Bonsall was known to play there often. Each night, his fiddle player Floyd Leblanc would end the night with “Over The Waves”
