Near “Yambolee” building in Opelousas- slab still there- Country bar late 60 early 70s- Bob Sobur & the Country Kings- Bob Sobur & the Sobur Boys (Bob Gautreaux)

Mentioned in Louisiana and Texas garage magazine Brown Paper Sack, issue #1, January, 1997 in the article “Toga a Go-Go!.″
The Roamin’ Togas vocalist Pete Adams: “There was this place in Opelousas we’d play called the Plantation, it was a drinking club, but basically that was the kind of place where, if you were tall enough to get your arm over the bar, they would serve you! Years after we’d played there, I’d meet people who’d say, ‘Man, I remember you, you’re the leas singer for the Roamin’ Togas- I saw you at the Plantation Club when I was fourteen.”

  2. In the early 80s a local radio station (possibly KEUN in Eunice) used to broadcast a live show from there on Saturday mornings. I recall for the longest time the band was usually Sheryl Cormier, although I do remember Nolan Cormier and the Cajun Hee Haws doing the show a few times.

  7. As one of Cal’s sons, I spent many weekend mornings, during early high school years, mopping dance floors, cleaning tables and disposing of mountains of empty beer cans, liquor bottles, cigarette butts and cocktail napkins. I also got lots of experience washing drink glasses. I did develop a real taste for those Stewart Sandwiches during lunch breaks between chores.

While the club’s Plantation Picnicers band was performing, we got a lot of experience with sound systems and recording for live performances both in Opelousas and on the road.

Just a different set of memories and experiences at this Louisiana dance hall.

  10. I worked there when I was in nursing school. It wasn’t long after that it shut down. The owner at that time was a young guy named David Hamilton. Heard he committed suicide by shooting him self
