Michael J Green (Rickels student, 1972): “Southwest of Lafayette on Ridge Road, about a quarter mile from the Abbeville Highway. It is a combination barber shop, grocery store, house, and bar. Stutes is the bartender, barber, justice of the peace, and a musician. The regular customers have been going there for decades. Most are middle aged oil field workers (2/3 are Cajun), who often bring their wives or entire families into the bar. T-Paul Duhon played the bones along with the jukebox there sometimes on Saturday nights. John Trahan was also a bartender.”

Art Mouton: “Ferdinand Stute’s in the early 1960’s was just outside the city limits of Lafayette so it was not subject to the “blue laws” preventing bar’s to open. It was a favorite place for us USL frat boys to visit on a Sunday. a few of my friends got married there. It was a memorable place.”

  4. I was married there back in the early 70’s. Mr. Stutes always gave the bride and groom each a silver dollar.

  5. Enjoyed your post. This was my great Uncle Ferdinand’s place. Went there several times. Would you be willing to share your pictures of the store front. Is that Uncle Ferdinand sitting in front?
    Thank you!

  6. My husband and I got married in the back of the bar where he lived. NO I WAS NOT IMPRESSED!! My father-in-law took us there to get married and back then NO ONE told him NO. That is something I would love to do over again for sure. No longer bashful to a fault!!!! It was so dirty back there that there was no place to sit down. It was not a shotgun wedding either lol. If I had only paid closer attention to the signs lol. I’m not talking about the ones you read either. This was June 28 1969. If any of his relatives have any pics of a young girl wearing a light yellow crepe dress with white chiffon ruffles please contact me on Facebook…I have no photos of that nightmare. 7. Circa 1975, a Cajun fellow walked in one evening with his washtub, stick and string, then proceeds to play music.

    Thanks for maintaining this website!
