Clement’s Club
Hollis Boudreaux- “One of the biggest places in south Louisiana. Don’t know the circa on that one, probably 40s my dad went there a lot when I was very young and it was of age bank then. A lot of good Cajun talent have visited that place and many a Mardi Gras dance also. It was across the highway from Cajun Downs which was a horse race track owned by the same man. Clement also owned the slaughter house next door. Heberts meat market has the best boudin hands down, they also make the red boudin which has the blood in it. At one time only two parishes could make it, then when my cousin Junior Luquette took it over he kept the original recipe. Anyway the place went through different owners, the dancehall I mean. Black Meaux took it over and got me to spin records in there three days a week to back up the bands and keep the crowd going. Leon Everette, the Ridge Runners, Wade Benson and the Tammy Wynette band and many others had the stage. Then tragedy struck, one night after 5th avenue played the place caught on fire and all our equipment was lost.” Owner was Clement Hebert- on 338 by the meat market From information at the Kaplan Museum: “Clement’s: This club was referred to by various names, Clems Clemons being a few. It was located north of Abbeville. Country and Western, along with French music, was the favorite.” ...
