Photos by Michael J. Green, from the Patricia Rickels Collection, Center for Louisiana Studies, UL Lafayette Michael J Green (Rickels student, 1972): “Southwest of Lafayette on Ridge Road, about a quarter mile from the Abbeville Highway. It is a combination barber shop, grocery store, house, and bar. Stutes is the bartender, barber, justice of the peace, and a musician. The regular customers have been going there for decades. Most are middle aged oil field workers (2/3 are Cajun), who often bring their wives or entire families into the bar. T-Paul Duhon played the bones along with the jukebox there sometimes on Saturday nights. John Trahan was also a bartender.” Art Mouton: “Ferdinand Stute’s in the early 1960’s was just outside the city limits of Lafayette so it was not subject to the “blue laws” preventing bar’s to open. It was a favorite place for us USL frat boys to visit on a Sunday. a few of my friends got married there. It was a memorable place.” ...
