Cheniere-au-Tigre Dancehall

Discussed in Zoe Sagrera Lynch’s book: My Memories of the Island: Remembering Life on Cheniere-au-Tigre, Louisiana, Claitor’s Publishing, 2010 Zoe Sagrera Lynch: “Liquor was not allowed in the dancehall. Many visitors hid their bottles of wine in the prickly pear bushes. They would sneak out to take a few sips, then return inside to dance. Bob Tasco sold his homemamde wine for $1.25 a gallon. Pete Petry says Daddy used to spike the eggnog or punch with a fifth of whiskey. People would swim across the Freshwater Bayou or walked across the marsh from Pecan Island to go to the dance. If they were too tired to go home and couldn’t afford a bed (25 cents), they slept on the dancehall floor.” ...

Horseshoe Club

LouisianaDancehalls.com reader comment- Althea Duplechain: “The Horse shoe club was a place where you could dance, drink, eat, gamble, (watch) rooster fighting, and then rent a cabin on the Catahoula Lake. It belonged to my Grandparents, Ignace & Altia Doucet and was in the small community of Catahoula, St. Martinville. Of course I was too young to know all of the awesome story that stem from the horse shoe club but I have three Aunts, my Mother & two Uncles still living who reminisce quite often. I’m certain they would love to share their stories if you would be interested.” Cajun club: Included in a list compiled by WYNK Cajun DJ “Tee Mick” Abed, sent to me in personal correspondence from David Marcantel ...

Ignace Doucet’s Club

Emily Ardoin: Apparently Ignace Doucet owned a few bars in a few different towns, including one in St. Martinville (I think – possibly The Buccaneer, which was on the same site as Signorelli’s). Eddie Bienvenu, a friend of my dad’s who lives in the area, said the dance hall was in the brick front building and there was cock fighting on the attached covered patio. I don’t know how easy it will be to see in the photo, but there are angled brick dividers on either side of the entry door. There was no front door on it, and we could see hay bales inside. A handmade security threat sign (deer cameras!) kept me from actually walking up to it and looking inside.http://goo.gl/maps/Zs3Ks ...
