Ronald Pellegrin: After WWII, Aswell Guidry and Dudley Callais, from South Lafourche purchased land on bayouside of Little Caillou from my father, Sivest Pellegrin, to build a dance hall. Around 1950 they sold the Rose Room to our cousin, Royal Pellegrin, from Montegut, Louisiana. He doubled the size of the the business. It had a restaurant, bar, and dance hall. Royal hired my father, Sivest, my mother, Edia, and sister, Gloria. Sivest, known as Sy, was bartender. Royal sold the business to another cousin, David Pellegrin, around 1955. My dad, Sy, opened up a bar and grocery store, across from the Rose Room. The Rose Room became a general merchandise and clothing store under David Pellegrin. The building is still there. Today it is a residence of another Pellegrin.

  1. I stumbled upon this article. My great uncle was Aswell Guidry and my uncle was Dudley Callais. My father, Joe Callais, Dudley’s brother, just celebrated his 91st birthday on January 7, 2017, and lives with me. I will print this article to show him. I’ve always heard about the “Rose Room”, but never saw a photo of it. We even visited Little Caillou to see if we could locate the building, not knowing if it still existed. Uncle Aswell was married to Louella Pellegrin from Little Caillou, so as a child I remeber going there. I remember her nephews also, Ronald & Dale Pellegrin. I’m 63 years old now. My parents, along with other relatives, including Roy Callais, worked there on weekends and traveled from Galliano. My mother’s uncle is Vin Bruce. I invited him to my father’s birthday party and the subject of the Rose Room came up. He said they built it just for him..lol.
